The Importance of Keeping Your Joomla Website in Current Version

Joomla Website Upgrade

In a very short period of time, Joomla has become the most popular Content Management System (CMS) available, and is one of the most popular application to build websites. Even major corporate companies have found Joomla to be ideal for managing all components of a website, from text to photos to music and video files, and perhaps best of all, Joomla is an open-source product that is free to the public.

Even though every working version of Joomla has been well received, there are reasons why it is advisable to upgrade Joomla to the latest stable version, and since upgrading versions is fairly easy to do, a Joomla update should never give administrators reason to fear the process.

Reasons for Upgrading Joomla

Functionality – The version designations for Joomla follow this numbering scheme: (major).(minor).(maintenance), such that version 3.1.5 means major version 3, minor version 1, maintenance release 5. In most minor versions and all major versions, new functionality becomes available that will make content management better, sometimes accommodating new features and sometimes including refined processes. This will be of great interest to Joomla programmers, Joomla developers, and Joomla designers, because they can take advantage of more tools offered in the application, and ultimately use them for the creation and maintenance of better websites.

SupportJoomla is a CMS package that must be constantly updated as the hosting environment, security threats, need for newer features have to addressed. Since Joomla is software that is offered free to the public, the Joomla experts are under no constraints to continue support for outdated versions of the product, and instead focus their energies on making the current version the best it can be. This being the case, as of January, 2015, Joomla 2.5 was no longer officially supported and major version 3 became the latest stable version.

Extensibility – Joomla is a highly extensible product, meaning that even though it may not contain everything under the sun for building websites, its inherent framework allows for add-on software that literally can include everything. With each new version of Joomla, extensibility increases and the universality of the software is enhanced right along with it.

Upgrading Considerations

Especially before a major version upgrade, be sure to back up your current website, just in case some things don’t work on the new version and require some modification. It’s also a good idea to check out any new server requirements that are associated with a major version Joomla upgrade to be sure that your web server and database are compatible with the latest Joomla version. If you are making use of templates in your Joomla development, make sure these are still compatible with your upgrade version.

Of course, if you subscribe to a Joomla provider service, you don’t really have to worry about any of this, because all the administrative tasks will be handled by your provider. One thing that will surely be recommended though, is that you migrate to the latest stable version of Joomla and begin taking advantage of all the newest functionality and up to date security patches.
